TRADITIONAL TALK THERAPY (PSYCHOTHERAPY)

IMG_0675.jpg

The aim of talk therapy is to eliminate or control troubling symptoms and behaviors that keep our clients from accessing increased well-being and healing. Psychotherapy clients gain coping skills that help them address the impact of trauma, illness, loss of a loved one, and specific mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Psychotherapy counseling services at Beauty for Ashes are flexible, client-focused experiences that may be used in combination with medication or other therapies.

FAITH-BASED PSYCHOTHERAPY

IMG_3749.jpg

Regardless of a person’s personal religious beliefs, humans are undeniably physical, emotional, thinking, and spiritual beings. Addressing all aspects of our personhood is essential to healing trauma.

Faith-based psychotherapy is a deeply holistic counseling service aimed at treating the whole person - mind, body, and soul. While some therapies focus solely on physical health, others on emotions, and still others on the interplay of body / mind / emotions (referred to as a bio-psycho-social approach), faith-based psychotherapy adds the vital element of spirituality or faith to more traditional psychotherapy.

Interested in a truly holistic approach? Beauty for Ashes counselors will meet you where you are at in your own spiritual / faith journey. We will help you to create harmony between your beliefs, experiences, thoughts, emotions, and actions. While our personal beliefs are Bible-based Christianity, all are welcome here, regardless of religious tradition.

ART THERAPY

Expressive art therapy services employ art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork as therapeutic and healing tools.

Clients from all walks and stages of life are able to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, increase self-esteem, and generally improve their sense of well being.

Art therapy is a powerful treatment for children and adults experiencing developmental, medical, educational, social, or psychological impairment. Self discovery, increased well being, and freedom from destructive behavioral patterns are all positive results of art therapy.

PLAY THERAPY

Toys are a child's words and play is their form of expression.

Our play therapy services offer children the opportunity to work through emotional and psychological challenges to achieve positive growth and health development. This counseling service may also include Sandtray Therapy, which allows the client to create their own miniature world using small toys and colored sand, thus creating a reflection of their inner and outer life. The therapist can use this microcosm as a tool to help the client resolve conflicts and discover healing.

WALK-AND-TALK THERAPY

Movement, whether it’s a leisurely walk or a brisk hike, can make it easier for some people to discuss their feelings. Our walk and talk counseling services are particularly helpful with teenagers, younger clients, or anyone who feels more at ease in nature. For individuals who have a lot of excess energy, feel uneasy with direct eye contact, or have trouble sitting still, this is a great option. Some therapists have noted that physical movement encourages psychological movement and can even accelerate client breakthroughs.

In a walk-and-talk therapy session, you’ll meet your therapist in a public park or on nearby trails. For our Greenville and Sumter, South Carolina clients, walk-and-talk therapy sessions typically take place along the Swamp Rabbit Trail or at Paris Mountain State Park. You’ll get in your daily walk, breathe fresh air, and meet with your therapist, all in one go!

Because walk-and-talk therapy deviates from the traditional, private office setting, you may have concerns about the details of such a therapy session. What do you do if you run into someone you know on the trail? Are you healthy enough to keep up? Will there be benches and access to water? Your Beauty for Ashes therapist will start by setting boundaries beforehand so that you feel safe and comfortable during your session.

THE DARING WAY(TM) & RISING STRONG(TM)

Beauty for Ashes Founder Cheryl Childers is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator (CDWF).  She applies this work to individuals, couples, families, work teams, and organizational leaders, in clinical, educational, and professional settings.

The Daring Way™ is a highly experiential methodology based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown. Daring Way facilitators explore topics such as vulnerability, courage, shame, and worthiness. Participants are invited to examine the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are holding them back and identify the new choices and practices that will move them toward more authentic and wholehearted living. The primary focus is on developing shame resilience skills and developing daily practices that transform the way we live, love, parent, and lead.

The philosophy behind much of The Daring Way™ work is encapsulated in Dr. Brené Brown’s book Rising Strong. This book owns the fact that living a brave life is not easy. Sometimes we will fall. That’s when we must learn to get back up, own our stories of struggle, and give ourselves the power to write a daring new ending. Struggle can, in fact, be our greatest call to courage and the clearest path to a wholehearted life.

Couples Counseling

IMG_1993.png

Our passion is working with couples in couples counseling who are motivated to make positive changes in their lives and in their relationships. Our couples therapist has expertise helping dating, engaged, married, committed, and separating couples.

Our goal is to make sure that your counseling suits your unique relationship, couple style, and needs. You can expect to talk about what you learned from the family you grew up in, your past relationships, and together we will explore how those experiences influence your present situation. We will help to highlight cycles in your current relationship and talk about how these patterns keep you ‘stuck’ in conflict and disconnection. Your couples counselor will encourage out-of-session practice so that the insights and skills you learn in the office help you build intimacy and trust at home. Frequently, we will refer to books that extend and deepen our discussion.
