Based on the research of Cheryl Lynn Childers, this workshop will explore the history of play therapy, its founders and movers and shakers of the play therapy community. Journey with Registered Play Therapist, Cheryl Childers along a timeline that will weave in and out of exploratory discussions, playful interventions and creative experiential exercises that will be anything but boring. If you are working the registered Play Therapy credential, this workshop is for you.

This series of experiential workshops gave me the tools and strategies I needed to build a Child-centered play therapy practice.

  • Examine the evolution of play therapy theories and approaches, and understand how they shape contemporary play therapy practice.
  • Explain the impact of influential play therapy pioneers, understanding their key concepts, techniques, and lasting contributions.
  • Explore the historical factors that shaped the development and acceptance of play therapy including societal attitudes.
  • Analyze the historical applications of play therapy in various settings.
  • Reflect on ethical issues and challenges in play therapy history.

    9:00 AM-9:15 AM Introduction of the presenter & intro to Child-Centered Play Therapy.


    9:15 AM – 9:30 AM Pre-Quiz/Q & A Discussion – What do you think you know?


    9:30 AM-11:30 AM The Play Therapy Timeline: Examine the general history and origin of play therapy and essential foundational theorists.


    11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Discussion of the general theories, guiding principles, therapy models and evidence-based research of play therapy


    12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Lunch Break - (Lunch is included)


    1:00 PM – 1:30 PM Large Group discussion based on the morning’s instruction, what was learned/gained? What do you need? Q & A.


    1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Continuing on The Play Therapy Timeline: Continuing the discussion of essential foundational theorists and their methods/discoveries.


    2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Experiential: Examining modern approaches through the eyes of our favorite historical Play Therapists.


    3:30 PM-4:00 PM Large Group Discussion: Historical cultural and ethical considerations to modern day problems.


    4:00PM Questions, final discussion, certificates and survey.
